BLOORS MANOR

Situated in Rainham, Bloors Manor is a picturesque manor house that was taken over with the hope to restoring it to its former glory.

Unfortunately, previous cement repairs, masonry and ironwork had damaged the stonework, predominantly around the window lights, which led to us getting involved in this project.

THE WORK UNDERTAKEN

We’re privileged to have been involved in multiple projects at Bloors Manor.

The original stonework had been fairly mistreated over the years with cement and fairly thick lead based paint having been used at various stages throughout its history, resulting in a high level of degradation to majority of the windows around the property.

The first part of the masonry project was to assess each window and remove any paint and the metalwork from them, and then to either repair or replace where necessary to retain as much of the original fabric of windows, whilst also ensuring they are structurally sound.

As you can see from the photos, the damage ranged from fairly minimal, requiring only minor repairs, to the replacement of an entire hood mould.

The second project required reinstating a window where one used to be, replicating the window repaired previously, and which now contained a doorway and smaller window.

The job involved removing a section of stonework above the doorway to allow for props and supports to be used whilst removing the door and window without damaging the structure of the building.

It then required building up the external and internal stonework and using lifting equipment to install the large Kentish rag window, worked and provided by our colleagues at pinnacle stonework.

We then had to fill in the remaining stonework and point using a style called galleting, which means to insert chips of stone into the pointing, a style usually only seen in Kent.

The third project entailed building a dwarf wall out of Kentish ragstone, all of which was sourced from the property grounds, and probably made up various other parts of the property in years gone by.

One of the jamb stones is sourced from the previous project of changing a later doorway addition, back to its former glory of a double light window, the section made up part of the original window and was surplus to requirements when installing the new one, and has not gone to waste.

We’re specialists in undertaking stonework repair in Kent, and based in Faversham, we cover the whole county.
